Modern Writing: A Personal Journey

What does it mean to be a writer, especially in today’s literary climate? First of all, I love writing. I wasn’t someone who chose to be a writer. I was born one. With that said, for me it means being a storyteller. Not just someone who types out words, but a crafter of words that are woven together like a tapestry. Someone who takes the people of this world, situations they find themselves in, difficult relationships, trials, tribulations, ups, and most certainly downs, and puts them on a page. My job as a writer is to create stories and characters that everyone can relate to in some way.

Why am I asking this question, you wonder? Because as a writer, someone you’ve given your trust to so you can be entertained, I also want you, my dear reader, to know just why I do what I do. It’s simply that. I want to entertain you, but I also want you to see yourselves in the stories, the characters, and plots that I create. It doesn’t matter what you look like, where you come from, how you were raised, what your faith is, etc. when it comes to a crafted tale. What matters is that you are human and we as humans go through some stuff. Good things, bad things, happy things, sad things, and all the things one can think of. As a reader, I like relating to a particular character, a particular story, because I like finding pieces of myself within them. I like knowing that not only is this universal, but it’s also personal. It helps me build a relationship with the writer, which I personally think is very important. Someone gives you their trust to read their work and they in turn take your trust to be given an experience. It’s that experience, however it is presented, is where things get personal and that foundation a relationship is built upon.

Simply put: Being a modern writer isn’t just someone who entertains the masses, but someone who can take a little slice of the universe and present it to a vast assortment of individuals in a very deep and personal way.
